Course Description: For the beginner student. Covers all primary skills required for
the production of black-and-white photographs, including camera operation, exposure, film developing, printing, spotting, and mounting prints.

Course Objectives: A comprehensive beginning black and white photography class covering an introduction to the camera, and the process of exposing, developing and printing 35mm black and white film. The emphasis is on developing techinque/proper procedure with the camera and in the darkroom. Guided weekly assignments will be given to develop camera and darkroom skills. Students will also work individually with the instructor to develop their own ideas of one idea/theme which will culminate in a final series of 4 mounted prints.

Course Overview:
1. Use a manually operated 35mm camera. You will choose f-stops, shutter speeds, and types of film appropriate to the type of image you are making.

2. Expose and develop black and white film.

3. Make black and white photographs.

4. Conceive and execute a final series of 4 mounted prints representing one idea/theme.

Requirements:
1. Attendance: Please refer to your student guide book for attendance policy. It is essential that you attend all classes and show up on time. Slide lectures, demos, and critiques can not be made up. Excessive absences will affect your grade.

2. To have all the necessary materials at each class.

3. Respect the area you in which you are working. Develop good dark room habits. Clean up after you work in the darkroom. You must carry a hand towel when working, use trays when carrying wet photos, and gloves while developing. Keep hands OUT of the chemicals! Return film developing tanks/reels clean and DRY.

4. All class assignments are to be turned on time. Late assignments will be graded down. At the end of the semester a final series of 4 mounted prints are due representing a final body of work of a cohesive theme and style.

5. An incomplete will only be given in emergency situations.

Methonds of Instruction: The methods of instruction for this class include demonstration of proper darkroom procedure, weekly guided assignments, and individual final projects. Slide lectures and group critiques will also take place throughout the summer session.

Final Grade Breakdown: 50% class assignments/50% final project= 100% final grade

Grading Criteria: Just doing the assignments does not mean that you will earn an “A” in this class. You must complete the goals for each assignment, execute at the expected level of technical proficiency, and give a good presentation to the final print. For the final presentaion I expect to see a throughly explored theme/idea, with an excellent presentation. You will need to shoot for your final project weekly starting no later than May 28. For the final presentation you should edit from at least 8 prints from 6 different contact sheets.
