Arts 110 - 03 Fall 2002 Georgetown University

Room 297 Walsh
Professor E-mail: er39@georgetown.edu
Office Hours: By appt. only. Meetings can be arranged for any assistance during the semester.
Course Description: An introductory course for the development of basic drawing skills and
practice in the use of various drawing materials. Observation, memory training, and composition
are stressed to give the student a wide experience and solid base in the art of drawing.
Course Goals and Objectives: The goal of this class is for students to develop their perceptual
skills and facility in drawing. The student is expected to make an investigation into the expressive
means of drawing using line, value, texture, form and space. Students drawings are expected to
develop a high standard of composition as the semester progresses in a range of media and
materials. Most importantly, the student will learn to employ drawing as a tool in their individual
art making decisions.
Course policies:
Studio Use: Students are responsible for studio clean up after each class, including leaving
drawing tables clean, discarding trash, and stowing away personal materials and supplies.
Attendance Policy: 3 unexcused absences are allowed. Beyond 3 unexcused absences
constitutes an entire letter grade lower for the final semester. Additional unexcused absences
result in an automatic F for the final semester grade. Missed slide lectures and demos given in
class can not be made up. Lateness and leaving early not be tolerated and will affect your
overall progress and lower your grade.
Field Trips: Students are required to make at least two visits to local museums/galleries
during the semester to view and draw historical and contemporary works of art.
Assignments will be given for all field trips. Students are to record these field trips in their
sketchbooks.
Participation: Participation accounts for 25% of final semester grade. It is expected that
each student actively participate in as many departmental lecture series, field trips, artist visits,
and required field trips. It is mandatory that students actively participate in all studio critiques.
Your performance will be evaluated. Drawing takes practice. You will need to participate and work
hard to succeed in this class and in life as a visual artist. Develop good working habits early.
Sketchbook: In addition to weekly assignments, it is required that the student record daily
thoughts about their drawing process and record visual information in their sketchbooks.
The student is also responsible to respond to in-class drawing assignments and chart their progess.
The sketchbook will reflect the students working habits and commitment.
Sketchbooks will be collected and progress will be recorded weekly.
More about the Sketchbook: Tape all class handouts in it, take notes in it, write your thoughts or dreams in here, sketch in it, tape anything that interest you that pertains to your artmaking in it, date each drawing or thought in it. This is a very imporant part of this class and will be collected and graded. You must assume responsiblity for drawing on your own. You should draw a minimum of 15-30 minutes per day filling at least one or two pages of drawings from life. This is in addition to sketchbook assignments given from the professor. Not only will you be sketching and drawing, but you will be t hinking, looking, taking notes, reading and going to the library and exhibitions. You should enjoy doing these activities; as they are essential for you to fully undestand drawing and your position as an artist.
*This is a studio class, wear old clothes and expect to get dirty.
Percentage Breakdown of Final Semester Grade:
All Drawing Assignments (in and out of class) = 50%
Sketchbook and Participation = 50%
100% Final Semester Grade
Grading Criteria: There must be a symbiotic relationship between form and content in the work.
The student must make decisions on the appropriate use of drawing devices such as line,
value, texture, form and space. The level of compositional device used to render the drawing
will also be considered. Finally, all drawings must be finished and have a complete sense of
resolution in concept and execution. As the semester progresses, the student must show improvement.
The student is expected to develop an outstanding work ethic, and display a commitment to learning
how to draw. They must act responsily during critique time, and actively participate in all field trips.
The sketchbooks will reveal the working habits and daily effort to chart progress and commitment to developing perceptual skills..
Methonds of Instruction: The method of instruction for this class will be in the form of slide lectures, weekly guided classroom assignments, individual studio work outside of class, daily sketchbook pages, individual student/instructor critiques, and group critiques, field trips and visiting artists. All drawing assignmnets, as well as supplemental sketchbook assignments will be given weekly.
